Teaching your toddler to set goals for themselves can be a lot easier than you think using these toddler goal setting tips and phrase for it!

Why You Should Set Goals with Your Toddlers

Setting goals has always been important to me. I am huge advocate of writing your goals down and keeping them close. To this day the first page in my planner is dedicated to my personal and professional goals for the year ahead so when it comes to my kids I want to pass that importance on to them. Setting goals for a 2 and 3 year old aren’t always the easiest of concepts to explain but when I heard about the #KidsGoals Campaign with Gymboree I had to jump on board! With the new school year rolling around I thought it’d be the perfect time to introduce them to the idea of setting goals and I’ll show you just how we did it here with my best toddler goal setting tips!

Toddler Goal Setting Tips

To be honest this is the first year I have decided to try and goal set with my 3.5 year old as a part of preparing her for the new school year at the Montessori school. She was in the 2-3 year old class last year for the first time and this year she was moving up to the 3-6 year old class so I felt like she had a better idea of what “the first day of school” and the “new school year” really meant. She was so eager for school to start so it was an easy convo to incorporate the idea of a goal into. So at dinner the night before her first day I asked her one simple question:

“What do you hope to get better at this year in school?”

I wasn’t even fully sure if she’d understand the question but I wanted to start planting the idea of a goal in her head. She answered very quickly, “I want to do the tire swing all by myself.” At 3 years old this was definitely something I could work with. I can’t tell you the amount of times she scrapped her knee on that thing last year! So we talked about ways that she can achieve this goal and who could help guide her through it (since mommy and daddy wouldn’t be there with her) and although we were only talking about a tire swing we had a great conversation and the fundamentals of goal setting were getting applied in the process.

How to Set Intentional Goals with Your Toddlers

#1 toddler goal setting tip: the biggest requirement when it comes to goal setting is to write them down. After we finished dinner we cleared our plates and came back to the table and I handed my daughter this piece of paper shown here (Click Here To Download). I read it to her and explained that this is exactly what we just talked about and one way to ensure we accomplish our goals is to write them down. I reiterated what she said her goal was (I want to do the tire swing all by myself) and then asked her to draw a picture of her doing just that in the empty box. To be honest, she hasn’t quite mastered the drawing part either but I was happy to help as she facilitated what her goal looked like in drawing form. I think by the next school year this will be a tool we will really be able to utilize and I am just happy to know that we have a foundation started and it really seemed to have sunk in. After her first day at school she was so eager to tell me how she tried the swing at recess and her teacher only had to push her a little bit.

Other Goal Setting Tips for Toddlers

Setting goals with toddlers doesn’t have to be extensive; it can be prompted by one single phrase and the follow through of putting it on paper. As for me, I have many goals FOR my girls this year as well and without overwhelming them I too wrote them down and plan to implement ways to accomplish them as the weeks progress.

My goal FOR THEM: To be prepared for the day ahead by bedtime the night before.

Head to toe in Gymboree!

Now of course, at 2 and 3 there really isn’t much for them to prepare the night before but as I mentioned above, it is good to get that idea of readiness in their heads even at this age. One way I do it for the girls is to have them pick out their outfits the night before so in the morning we can steam roll through our checklist and be out the door with as little drama as possible! I have to give a shout out to Gymboree for making this process so easy for me! At the Montessori school the kids are not allowed to wear any “character clothing” so getting the girls to pick out outfits is that much harder when I can’t use their favorite princesses to persuade them. We recently shopped Gymboree’s Back-To-School collection (found HERE) and got the girls some of the cutest stuff that they are both excited about and I am too! You are sure to find some great finds at Gymboree and not only will your kids be mentally prepared for the new school year, they’ll look awesome doing it!
