Whether you’re breastfeeding one child or two there are always challenges getting into the groove of nursing. I successfully nursed my first two singletons so I had a great base to start with when the twins rolled around but nursing two babies is just simply a whole new ball game! There are definitely some products that have helped through all 3 of my nursing journeys and some specific to my twin breastfeeding journey that I am currently on. I’m excited to share with you my breastfeeding essentials for twins that have really helped me plus some tips for breastfeeding twins. And at the end of it all, once weaning is done, if you’re not happy with the way things have ‘shaped-up’ you might want to consider a service like Nipple Correction in NYC. It can really help you get your body confidence back after what can be a difficult time for any woman.

  • A Nursing pillow: First and foremost you need to have a comfortable pillow that also offers support to your arms and back.
    • My Brest Friend Nursing Pillow- I used this one with both of my girls and it was by far my favorite and most comfortable to use.
    • TWIN VERSION of My Brest Friend Twins Plus Nursing Pillow– This is the one I currently use with my twins and as mentioned above the back support and comfort is key!
    • Boppy Nursing Pillow: I did use this pillow with my singletons as well and it is still a great option because it offers other uses as well (positioner for bottle feeding etc.) It really comes down to personal preference!
    • Twin Z Nursing Pillow: Although I don’t use this one for nursing I still have one personally and love it. I use it for when the twins get bottles, or if I need to keep them upright after a feeding and it has really become essential in those ways to us.
  • Nipple Butter: Let me just tell you that I might as well be an expert in the nipple butter department after 4 babies (you proud of me, mom!? Haha). But seriously I have tried it ALL. I’m here to say, don’t even bother with any other brand and go stock up on some Earth Mama Angel Baby Natural Nipple Butter now. (Tip/tricks: I put this stuff on everything, like the babies’ rashes or the girls’ cuts/scrapes and it works like a charm [not it’s intended use so follow the instructions on the label if you have any questions] )
  • Nursing Pads: I know reusable nursing pads that claim to be as soft as butter are the thing these days but they never worked for me. They always bunched up in my bra and looked weird through my shirts. Disposables were the best option for me and I tried a bunch of them. Some were so scratchy and uncomfortable but by far the softest and most comfortable for me have been the Johnson’s Nursing Pads. I’ve used them ever since I found them halfway through my nursing journey with my first daughter and haven’t turned back since!
  • Nursing Bras: I have a couple favorties for different reasons but these few have been my go to for sure:
    • Bravado Silk Seamless Nursing Bra: These are my go-to every day bras and theyre super comfortable and offer great support.
    • Cake Lingerie Nursing Bra: I LOVE these and they are great for everyday use but also great for the days I get into the gym, or we’re out on park adventures and nature walks. This style really has many uses!
  • Nursing Cami: I wear a nursing cami every single day. Sometimes I wear them alone or sometimes it’s under a tee shirt by I find them the most convenient piece of clothing while nursing a baby. Convenience is key!
    • Caramel Cantina 3 Pack Women’s Nursing Cami: Anything maternity or nursing seems to cost an arm and a leg but I found this three pack of camis for $36.99 and they are amazing! I have them in both color sets and they have held up extremely well!
  • Nipple Shield: A lot of lactation consultants will advise against these but they really helped me get through the first month of breastfeeding the twins. Between the two babies with two different latches (resulting in extra soreness) using a nipple shield really helped me a ton! I used the Medela Contact Nipple Shield and really liked it.
  • A comfy glider: My favorites are the Dutailier Sleigh Gliders (we got ours at Target) but I know a lot of stores carry this brand. The amount of hours spent nursing in that first year really calls for a supportive and comfortable chair. And you deserve it!!

Breastfeeding Essentials for Twins

I think I covered most of the basics above but one of the breastfeeding essentials for twins that has really helped me for nursing the twins is having my own little “nursing station”. Nursing on the go with the twins just isn’t even in my thought track at the moment and what has worked well for me is having one designated area for me to nurse them. Standard gliders just don’t typically work with twins because trying to get both situated (to tandem feed) is almost impossible to do alone. I will go into more detail on why I choose to tandem feed in another post but life with four kids under five is hectic and chaotic. Because of that it is a necessity to keep the boys on the exact same schedule which includes eating at the same time, every time!

Breastfeeding Essentials for Twins: Nursing Station

  • A place to sit low to the ground: I use an old crib mattress that was no longer getting any use directly on to the floor. I found a super comfortable crib sheet to cover it with which makes it easy to clean when needed. I LOVE Kickee Pants sheets because they’re super soft! The sheet pictured is found HERE.
  • Pillows: I have a few pillows that still match the décor of the room but that are there to offer me support when nursing. Tandem nursing can wreck havoc on your back so the extra support is a must! Pillow sham found HERE.
  • Nursing Pillow: I always keep my Brest Friend Twin Nursing pillow close by!
  • Somewhere to put the babies down safely when you’re setting up to nurse. I used the Twin Z pillow for the longest time but as the boys are getting older and wigglier, I wanted something I could strap them in to if needed. I found this Table For Two seat for twins and it’s perfect. It has been a great “docking station” (for lack of a better term) for them while I set up to feed.
  • Supplementing mamas: I do supplement the boys (more on that later as well) but it’s important to have bottles close by so you can feed them in the same position they were tandem feeding (which for me is the double football hold). The seat mentioned above does have great little bottle holders which is very convenient.
  • Keep all bibs/burp cloths close by so you can reach to either side and grab what you need!

Breastfeeding isn’t easy, no matter how many times you do it, or who tells you it shouldn’t be painful, you will most likely have some struggles in the beginning. Being prepared really can help you succeed in your breastfeeding journey and I hope this article plays a little part in that! If I missed any essentials please feel free to post them below in the comments. Also, pin and share the image below for your expecting mama friends! Enjoy!
