Organizing Kids Clothing Efficiently
Kid’s clothes can pile up quickly and organizing them seems to be a task just about every parent can relate to. I can’t count the amount of times my husband would open the girls’ dressers and although stockpiled with clothes, it seemed like there was never anything suitable for them to wear. The truth is, deep down in those drawers, there was definitely something for them to wear but because their clothes were so unorganized nothing really popped at the time. Laundry would get done and with all the little hands around trying to “help” clothes would just be put away in no specific order. It only got worse when we moved the girls into the same room a few months ago to prepare for their new brothers. After a few weeks of that chaos my OCD eventually caught up to me and I knew I needed to create a better solution. So I am happy to share with you all how to organize your child’s clothes with this super easy DIY kid wardrobe station (and FREE printables below).
Creating the DIY Kid Wardrobe Station
I came up with the idea of creating a DIY kids dressing station for the girls after being totally fed up with the above mentioned scenarios and I really love how it turned out! I knew I wanted them each to have their own space with their own set of clothes and I wanted it to be a space that they can navigate independently. If you’re new to my blog you will notice a definite trend in trying to help my girls (even as toddlers) be as independent in their daily routine as possible. This stems from my love of the Montessori Method and I try to incorporate those Montessori philosophies in our everyday routine!
The DIY Kid Wardrobe Station:
This space is designed to be their go-to spot in the morning when it comes time for school, or whatever activity that day brings. Everything in this DIY kid wardrobe station is well within their reach and understanding (through easy to use buckets and labels). I try to stock their wardrobe with as many basic pieces of clothing I can find. The reason behind this is so that they can be free to pick out their outfits independently and I can be sure that in some way they will still match/be presentable for school.
How To Create This Kid Wardrobe Station:
- I bought two Trofast Storage Units from Ikea and screwed them together. I then anchored those units to the wall to avoid a tipping hazard.
- On one side I used three Ikea Trofast Storage boxes and on the other I used a small tension rod (found here- affiliate link).
- To make it simple I narrowed down their wardrobes to three items (Tops, Bottoms and Dresses) and used printables (available below) to label the bins. FOR BOYS- you can browse my available printables for the combination that best fits your child’s wardrobe. I printed these at home and used small self lamenting labels I found at Target to make them thicker/more durable then double sided sticky tape to attach to the coordinating bins.
- Socks & Underwear: My girls share these items so for these I made a separate unit using Target Pillowfort Stackable Wood Bins and labeled them accordingly.
- To finish off your space add hamper for dirty clothes and a mirror so they can check out their outfit choices to really make this space fully functional for them!
